User problem

New sellers joining Square Appointments face a significant hurdle: manually inputting their entire service catalog before they can start accepting online bookings. For the average beauty and personal care business owner, this means creating around 30 individual services—a tedious process that delays their ability to start booking clients and generating revenue. This manual setup is particularly burdensome for sole proprietors and small business owners who are already juggling multiple responsibilities in running their businesses.

Service Library Builder basic flow

Solution summary

We developed an AI-assisted Service Library Builder that helps sellers quickly transform their existing service information into a complete booking catalog. The solution allows sellers to:

  • Import service data through multiple methods (website links, PDFs, or spreadsheets)
  • Set smart defaults for missing information like duration and pricing
  • Review and edit AI-generated services in a streamlined interface
  • Add and organize service categories inline
  • Make services immediately available for online booking

The design balances automation with seller control, addressing a key concern we heard in research.

Impact

The Service Library Builder notably improved the onboarding experience for new Square Appointments sellers:

  • Reduced service setup time from hours to minutes
  • Increased completion of the setup process
  • Accelerated time to first booking
  • Helped sellers launch their online booking channels faster

As an early AI initiative at Square, this project also established patterns for integrating AI assistance while maintaining user trust and control—insights that are now informing AI features across other Square products.
